Macomb Street Gallery show.

Well the show at the Macomb Street Gallery was a success. The turnout was great and I got to have a lot of great conversations with people. Thanks to all that came out and a special thanks to those that drove a long way to see the show. Here are some images to possibly persuade you all to go see it for yourself.
John B. Wood's work is really interesting. They are made out of glass and are very luminous. I think the paintings played well off the glass work, and vice versa.

Go check it out!

It's really too bad that this will be the last show at this gallery. It was kind of a bittersweet celebration, but I think that they will do even better in a different location.

Read this article.

Above is an article in the New York Times about the recent trend in teens engulfed in "Myspace Culture" of the self portrait. It observes how people will take countless pictures of themselves until they get the perfect profile picture. They test out different poses, facial expressions, etc. until they accurately portray themselves in the most attractive way possible.

I think there is something to be said about this in the art world. Artists have been doing self portraits for centuries, but I think now more than ever, self portraits have taken on a new role in the arts. Instead of posing with a blank stare like a typical Van Gogh self portrait out of convenience, painters are now painting/drawing/photographing themselves in all these expressive ways, allowing the viewer to witness all sides of the artist. I think a lot of this generation is into this whole voyeuristic thing. They want people to be watching their every move, noting how they move their hips as they walk, how cool their new shirt looks on them, how their biceps bulge out of their tight fitting shirt, and how they pout their lips a little as they are staring off into space. With the introduction of the ever-so-popular Livejournal, we find people putting their innermost thoughts on the internet for everyone to read as if the whole world actually loses sleep over the fact that your boyfriend broke up with you, or that you feel as though you have no friends anymore.

The article raises some great points about the influence of the digital camera, and how it is so easy, fast, and cheap to take hundreds of pictures and simply delete the ones that are unflattering.

I thought it was a pretty amusing article for the same reason that I like the comedy of Dane Cook and others like him....the truth is often hilarious.

Fort

I had the privilege of attending the Fort opening tonight in a space that I never even new existed, right next door to the 555. Artists Ilana Goldszer and Jocelyn Gotlib formed the team entitled "Fort" for a 2 month collaboration where they saught to eliminate ownership and ego over one's artwork, chosing instead, for a limited time to create art as a team for the sake of making art, rather than owning what they do individualy. This is an idea I myself have pondered, since a lot of being an artists is less about making the art than making a name for yourself.

This one was entitled "Reign of Terror 1789" which I found humorous. Created from scraps of materials. There's even little shards of glass buried in there.

This piece was my favorite. I loved that flatness of the faces. They pulled this one off quite well.
There was another one just like this, only with her eyes closed. I thought I got a picture of it but I guess I missed that one. Regardless, this was another one of my favorites.

Quite a nice turnout for such an off the beaten path space. Great job ladies.

CHOMP!!

These are a bunch of these little 8x10 works on paper that I've been doing. The ones with the teeth are part of a series entitled "Chomp!". I'm pretty excited about them. They're really playful and experimental, and a great outlet for humor in my art. I would eventually like to have a show with a bunch of these framed and hung.
